Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Skulsk

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Skulsk

Brick church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph was erected at the beginning of the 19th century on the site of a former Gothic temple (it burnt down in 1785). The remains of it are fragments of the original walls, hidden under the plaster, in the presbytery and the chapel adjacent to the church. In the years 1881-90 the nave was extended by one span and a new tower and sacristy were built. The interior of the temple hides altars and frescoes and a richly decorated pulpit with a figure of the archangel Michael.

The most valuable monument of the temple - a Gothic sculpture of Our Lady of Sorrows holding the dead body of Christ taken off the cross on her lap, the so-called Pieta, comes from 1420. The figurine was crowned on June 3, 1997 in Gniezno by Pope John Paul II.
