Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Skulsk
The brick Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the site of a former Gothic temple, which was destroyed by fire in 1785. Fragments of the original walls remain hidden under the plaster in the presbytery and the chapel adjacent to the church. Between 1881 and 1890, the nave was extended by one span, and a new tower and sacristy were added. The interior of the church features altars, frescoes, and a richly decorated pulpit with a figure of the Archangel Michael.
The most valuable monument in the church is a Gothic sculpture of Our Lady of Sorrows, holding the dead body of Christ, taken off the cross and placed on her lap (the so-called Pietà). This sculpture dates back to 1420 and was crowned by Pope John Paul II on June 3, 1997, in Gniezno.
