Sanctuary in Kawnice
The origins of the sanctuary date back to 1628, when the painting of the Virgin Mary with the Child was brought to Kawnice from Lviv. The image was placed in a wooden church that had been recovered from the hands of Protestants. Today, the painting is housed in a brick church and is surrounded by numerous votive offerings, the oldest of which date back to the 18th century.
As the devotion to the painting grew, Pope Pius IX instituted a three-day indulgence in honor of the Comforter of the Afflicted, which is still celebrated every year on the Sunday after August 28. In addition to the main church feast, there are five other one-day church fairs held throughout the year at the church in Kawnice.
Since 1981, the Salesian priests have been responsible for the care of the sanctuary.
