Economy of Konin County

Agriculture plays a dominant role in the county's economy, providing employment (along with forestry and fishing) to 46.65% of the working population in the county. It plays a very important role in the economic development of the Konin Region. A significant portion of the total area of 157,824 ha is arable land, primarily consisting of soils of the 5th and 6th valuation classes.

Equally important sectors of the economy include animal production, horticulture, and agri-food production. The non-agricultural sectors of the county's economy are dominated by entities engaged in trade, transport, construction, real estate services, business services, and financial intermediation. Small and medium-sized enterprises are the main potential "creators" of new jobs. A large portion of the enterprises are small businesses, with a smaller portion belonging to the medium-sized category. The large enterprises include the brown coal mine in Konin, which is part of the ZE PAK capital group.

In addition to agriculture, industry plays an important role. The dynamic development of the surface mining industry has significantly contributed to the economic growth of the county. Since the administrative division and the establishment of Konin County, the number of private entrepreneurs has been steadily increasing, and their market share is extremely important. The ongoing changes are crucial for attracting potential investors and foreign capital, thereby creating new jobs.

The industrial character of the Konin Region is showcased by the physical plants operating here, including the aforementioned PAK KWB "Konin" S.A., Art-Metal, Kramp, Wulkanex, Mar-Bud, Konińska Fabryka Okien (Konin Window Factory), Galwa-Met, "Kupiec," and many others operating in the county. The value of our land is also appreciated by foreign investors. In the county, well-known plants of international renown include: the Swedish company Smurfit Kappa, which produces corrugated cardboard packaging; Lite-Licht, a producer of high-quality technical lighting fixtures; and Europoles, a company with 120 years of experience in the production of poles, masts, and towers.

The lands near the A2 motorway have been developed by companies from the automotive industry, such as Mercedes and Renault. These advantages formed the basis for the development and implementation of the Wielkopolska Logistics Center (Wielkopolskie Centrum Logistyczne – WCL). Within the WCL zone, there are already companies involved in logistics, warehousing, transport services, and production activities, including Smurfit Kappa, Europoles, Zink Power, KON-PLAST, and others.

Equally important for the economic development of the county is its attractive landscape, with its abundance of lakes, forests, reserves, and protected areas, which contributes to the growth of tourism and agritourism. Agritourism provides an alternative or supplementary way of utilizing the family farm environment and serves as a source of additional income. Spending leisure time in rural areas increases demand for various goods and services, which in turn helps create new jobs. As a result, it has a positive impact on the quality of life in the countryside.

Nature has generously endowed our land with valuable natural resources, including:

  • Geothermal waters – There are two boreholes in the county, located in the communes of Wilczyn and Ślesin. These are medium- and highly mineralized waters.
  • Lignite – Deposits of this raw material are found in the northern and southern parts of the county. Its exploitation is expected to be viable until around 2040.
  • Natural aggregates – The largest deposits of this material are located in the commune of Krzymów.
  • Quartz sands – Unexploited sand deposits are situated on the border of the Stare Miasto and Rzgów communes.
  • Peat – Deposits are found in the commune of Kramsk.

Lignite, mined and used as the primary energy resource in Konin's power plants associated with the ZE PAK S.A. group, plays a crucial role in the county's economy. The identified deposits of sand, peat, groundwater, and geothermal waters are also of significant economic importance. Proper and sustainable management of these resources, without harming the natural environment, will allow for the rapid economic development of the county. As a result, the standard of living for the residents of our region increases year after year.

An undeniable asset for the county's economic development is its central location, with extensive road and rail routes linking international and national communication networks. The areas adjacent to the A2 motorway, located within the municipalities of Stare Miasto, Golina, Rzgów, and Krzymów, form what is known as the "accelerated development zone." The areas near the motorway junctions in Modła Królewska (exit to National Road No. 25) and Żdżary (exit to National Road No. 72) are particularly attractive to investors.

In the immediate vicinity of the A2 motorway, the Wielkopolska Logistics Center (Wielkopolskie Centrum Logistyczne – WCL) was established through the initiative of Konin entrepreneurs, the City of Konin, and the Stare Miasto Commune. The 100-hectare area has been appropriately adapted to meet the needs of logistics companies and importers. WCL provides support to investors wishing to start a business.
